Middle East’s first solar-powered abra ferries passengers in Dubai
The first solar-powered abra in the Middle East has begun operations in the emirate.
- The Roads and Transport Authority says the boat can travel for six hours at a speed of four knots per hour (7.4 kilometres an hour).
- The abra is being used at Al Mamzar and was introduced to service after several trial runs.
- A balance test was conducted by a specialist company during a one-month trial run at Al Jaddaf with no passengers on board.
- The boat was converted from electric power after the installation of solar panels on the roof as well as other operational accessories, said the RTA.
